ルイ・ギャレルは、カメラマンの実父の被写体となり俳優としてのキャリアを『le Baiser de Secours(救いの接吻)()』の出演で6歳で開始。演技を学びつつ、フランス国立高等演劇学校で学ぶ。その後映画界へ。ベルトルッチの後にフィリップ・ギャレルの『les Amants Réguliers(恋人たちの失われた革命)』で、セザール賞最優秀男優賞を受賞。2004年、クリストフ・オノレの初監督作品『Ma Mère(ママン)』で、イザベル・はパートと共演。映画監督にこよなく愛される俳優となる。 2008年、初の監督作品『Petit Tailleur(小さな仕立て屋)』と、2本目の短編作品で映画祭の話題をさらう。
